MOTS-c and the AMPK Pathway: In-Vitro Research Overview

A 16-residue peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA has become a key tool for cellular energetics research.

MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. Its discovery expanded interest in mitochondrial-derived peptides as signalling molecules.

Why AMPK

AMP-activated protein kinase is a central energy sensor in the cell. Published in-vitro studies have explored MOTS-c in relation to AMPK activation and folate-cycle metabolites, making it a frequent subject of cellular energetics research.

Typical laboratory readouts

  • Phospho-AMPK (Thr172) by Western blot or ELISA
  • Cellular ATP/ADP ratios
  • Oxygen consumption rate on extracellular flux analysers
  • Nuclear translocation imaging

Handling notes

MOTS-c contains methionine and is susceptible to oxidation. Store lyophilised at −20 °C, protect from light and aliquot after reconstitution.

Related reagents: MOTS-C 10 mg. Each batch ships with documented HPLC purity and a Certificate of Analysis on request.
